About the scientific internship of doctoral candidate Berdenova B.

at the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (WPI-I2CNER), Japan

PhD student of the Department of Mechanics Berdenov BA passed an internship for two months in summer 2017 through the program of KazNU for Graduate Student’s Foreign Training. She passed an internship in the laboratory of her foreign supervisor Professor B.B. Saha from June 10 to August 15 at the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (WPI-I2CNER) at Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan. During the practice she conducted experiments, took part in seminars conducted by the laboratory, made presentations on the work progress.

Theme of doctoral thesis of given student is «Adsorption Characterization of Parent and Composite Activated Carbons for Ultra-high Efficiency Energy Storage and Adsorption Cooling Systems». The research has a practical significance, because the ways of optimization of adsorption cooling systems, to enhance the working pair (refrigerant/adsorbent) in order to increase the performance coefficient of ASOs will be considered, and the possible application of these materials in highly efficient energy storage will be investigated. As adsorbents, in particular, parent and composite activated carbons will be considered.

Foreign supervisor, prof. Bidyut Baran Saha is one of the leading specialists in the world on adsorption processes and the use of adsorption processes in practice, has more than 150 publications on the topic.

The local supervisor Prof. Aidarkhan Kaltayev has extensive experience in organizing and conducting scientific research and is an Academician of the National Academy of Engineering of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Acquaintance and further cooperation with the supervisor's laboratory is a key point for each doctoral candidate for the successful defense of a doctoral degree and development as a researcher in general.

PhD of the Department of Mechanics Zhilkibaeva Saltanat

passed a scientific internship in the USA on the basis of the University of Bridgeport (Bridgeport, Connecticut)

The third-year PhD candidate of Department of mechanics Zhilkibayeva Saltanat spent a 3-month scholarship in the University of Bridgeport (Bridgeport, CT, USA) last spring of 2017. She undertook research on her PhD thesis «Development of the technique of calculation of forecasting the durability and rigidity of robotic systems taking into account the distributed dynamical loadings» under the overall guidance of her local and foreign supervisors – the professors M. Utenov and T. Sobh. The relevance of her scientific work is the analytical determination of internal forces and deformations in the links of projected manipulators and robotic systems. This doesn’t take into account only the weight of links and the external forces, but also considers the longitudinal and transverse inertial forces arising in the links of these systems, which is an urgent task. Zhilkibayeva Saltanat investigated the structure of manipulators and robots and their control at the RISC Lab of the University of Bridgeport during her scholarship.

Foreign internship of undergraduates

This summer we, undergraduates specializing in mechanics and mathematics at the KazNU named after al-Farabi K(uan Makpal, Kazakbay Gauhar, Saparova Balzhan, Abilov Aidarkhan, Amanbay Madiyar, Berdikhalykh Arman, Ibyrkhanov Temirlan, Kalykova Gulnaz, Myrzabek Gulnaz, Nikitina Yuliya, Razuvayeva Tatyana, Saktashova Gulzat, Salavatov Temirlan), passed a foreign internship at the AGH Scientific and Technical University (Poland, Krakow) under the Summer School program "Energy Storage and Geoenergetics".For two weeks (26.06.2017-07.07.2017) from 8 am to 6 pm we listened to the lectures delivered by the leading professors and specialists of this institution, such as Professor Wojciech Nova, Professor Stanislav Nagi, PhD Doctor Tomasz Chliva, PhD Dr. Stanislav Luchinsky. The lectures were very interesting and useful. The lecture topics covered a very wide range of topics: Basics of energy storage in industry, underground natural gas and storage of hydrogen, geothermal systems and borehole heat exchangers, formation fluid measurements and rock properties.

We learned a lot about the methods of obtaining and storing energy. In addition to the lectures were practical exercises, on which we calculated the duration of work and the payback of geothermal solar heat pumps. We listened to all the lectures planned for the program and passed exams at the end of the course. The results of the exams pleased not only us, but also our lecturers. They gave us network certificates with good grades.

The program of the summer school included an important fact-finding part: solar collectors and heat exchangers were demonstrated to us, at the same time they gave us an opportunity to see everything and told about each detail and the structure of the heat exchanger. An excursion to the laboratories was conducted, where they showed us the models of electromachines over which they are going to work in the future. We visited the underground storage of natural gas, which was previously a gas field, and they explained to us how they pump gas under the water for storage and how to dry this natural gas for use. We also visited a geothermal thermal plant located in the mountains of Zakopane. The staff of the plant was glad to receive us, many interesting things were told and shown. There, we listened to several lectures on the structure of the borehole heat exchangers, on the introduction and operation of the borehole heat exchangers and the use of old wells as downhole heat exchangers. We visited the field, where several wells are located, used in the summer to receive energy and for the aqua park, located nearby, and in winter time for receiving energy.

In addition to studying, we visited local attractions. We visited the central square of the city called the Main Market, where we saw various interesting sculptures and visited the Wawel Castle, strolled along the banks of the Vistula River.

We are very pleased that our university gives us the opportunity to visit the leading universities of the world and listen to lectures of the best professors of foreign countries. This not only complements our knowledge, but also inspires a better study, gives an incentive to deepen their knowledge of the English language, to strive for further all-round development.
